The New Empirical Industrial Organization: An Emphasis on Network Industries

Course Overview

This week-long module will cover research methods in new empirical industrial organization (NEIO) as applied to network industries. The first part of the module will focus on seminal papers that illustrate empirical methods in NEIO with both homogeneous and heterogeneous products. The second part of the module will focus on empirical applications to the economics of network industries.

Course Structure

  • Topic I: Introduction to the class and to the NEIO
  • Topic II: Seminal papers that illustrate empirical methods in NEIO with homogeneous products
  • Topic III: Discrete choice models of product differentiation
  • Topic IV: An introduction to network economics
  • Topic V: Empirical research on network effects
  • Topic VI: Empirical research on standards competition

  • The seminar is offered for Master of Science students and Master of Business Research students
