Competitive Strategy
Advanced Strategy and Organization in Technology Markets
Prof. Dr. Thorsten Grohsjean, Prisca Friedrichs
Course Overview
Understanding how firms can achieve and sustain a competitive advantage is at the heart of strategy research. This course introduces both classical and recent concepts and theories at the macro level that offer explanations for short and long term differences in firm performance. We thereby focus especially on the following three questions:
- What makes companies successful today?
- How and by which factors do they successfully grow?
- Why and how do firms successfully change?
The lecture will tie back the theoretical concepts to real-life examples especially from technology-intensive industries. While lectures will mainly focus on theoretical concepts, students will work on exercises and case studies related to topics introduced in the lectures during the tutorials.
The course is generously supported by the LMU Management Alumni Network.

The course divides into a lecture and a subsequent tutorial. Both parts are required to successfully pass the exam. The exam is comprised of 60 minutes questions on the lecture and 60 minutes case study.
